Month for Loki, Day 23: And…He’s wonderful.

“He’s like fire and ice and rage.
He’s like the night, and the storm in the heart of the sun.
He’s ancient and forever.
He burns at the centre of time and he can see the turn of the universe.
And…He’s wonderful.”
-Tim Latimer, about the Doctor
Doctor Who, BBC series
Season 3, Episode 9: The Family of Blood
Yes… 😀
Yes, he is the wonderful one. 🙂
Wonderful and wild
I hit the ‘like’ button on this post earlier; but didn’t comment because I don’t work with Loki enough to share this kind of perception of him – and, while I know it’s a crime in several jurisdictions, I’m not a Dr. Who fan. But I’ll be damned if I can’t get this quote you posted out of my head! As I type this, I have the episode you cited running in the background, so I can hear the quote delivered in its original. To me, just in reading this, it seems similar to some of the more ecstatic descriptions of Odin … descriptions I can relate to at some times, in particular when relating to Odin through the element of storm.
The descriptions I’ve been seeing of Loki from his followers around the Internet, in many ways, remind me of how a younger, more reckless Odin might be described. How interesting then, that at around 23 minutes into the episode, the description you quoted in your post should be delivered by a child 🙂
Thank you for managing to get in my head a little today!
Storm,
I totally agree with you here, that this quote could apply to both Loki *and* Odin. I personally believe that Loki and Odin are more alike in many ways that a lot of people give Them credit for being.
On another note, I don’t think that Tim is an ordinary child in the sense that what he has experienced has definitely changed him and I daresay sadly matured him in ways that frightening and dangerous experiences sometimes do…and yet when he says this quote, his tone does seem to have a quality of child-like faith in it.
As for watching DW, I hope that you enjoyed the episode! The Family of Blood is one of my top three favorite episodes of the ‘new’ Doctor Who. The character of Tim Latimer also shows up in a later episode two seasons later, as an elderly man who attends the wedding of another character on Armistice Day. (He wears a commemorative poppy along with his medals.)
I agree, that there is much more to Loki and Odin than the lore that we have discovered so far has to say. I’ve found it interesting and educational to read between the lines when it comes to Loki. As such, I have postulated before that Loki might either be a former lover of Odin’s (keeping in mind that Loki can shift gender as well as shape; and Odin has been accused of ergi before, for using the same type of magic Loki was likely just as well-versed in); or that Loki is perhaps even an unnamed son of Odin’s, rather than brother or blood-brother (here, I find it interesting that the name of Loki’s father relates to lightning and storm; as well as the fact that Odin cannot bring himself to kill Loki or any of Loki’s children, leaving that task to his various sons). I think neither of these ideas are impossible ones; but the idea of Loki being a younger and more reckless Odin is what is really tugging at the corners of my mind. Odin doesn’t communicate much to me when it comes to Loki – I don’t think the need has ever really arisen. For now, I’m happy learning more about Loki from those who are working with him, either directly or indirectly; and that is part of the reason why I treasure posts like this one (the other part is that the quote is really that good!) 🙂
[…] Wild Hunt blog got me to thinking a little bit about time, on a day when I had already encountered a post on the Bloodteethandflame blog, that included a Doctor Who quote (which I still cannot get far from […]
Reblogged this on Fire and Ink.
I agree with Stormwise, the first time I hear this quote I thought of Odin (but I can see how it would be a good fit for Loki, too).
Absolutely! As I said in my comment to Storm above, I think that Odin and Loki are more alike than un-alike in many ways. 🙂
[…] touched you. While reading the blog, bloodteethandflame, just a few days ago, I was treated to a quote from an episode of Doctor Who, that made me think of Odin, the similarities between descriptions of Loki and a younger and more […]
